Cornish Art History Study Days

In her study mornings, art historian Catherine Wallace combines lectures with guided tours on the same theme using a wide range of stunning visual images. Catherine delivers her lectures with an in-depth knowledge with informative commentary including a wide range of art historical themes from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as details of historically significant artists and contemporary ones. 

These study mornings are a more concentrated way of learning and are offered both live at venues in Cornwall and online. .

Ithell Colquhoun Study Morning

Tuesday 29 April 2025 – 10.30am – 1.00pm

At The Borlase Smart Room, Porthmeor Studios, Back Road West , St. Ives and Tate St. Ives

To coincide with the major exhibition of Ithell Colquhoun’s work at Tate St. Ives this study morning will include a 1 hour lecture at Porthemor studios giving a background to the artist – her origins in India and education at the Slade School of Art 1927 – 1931 her encounter with Salvador Dali which lead to her embracing the Surrealist movement both at home in the UK and abroad. We shall look at her love of flowers and nature and how she used them as a motif in her art. In the late 1930s Colquhoun came to Cornwall to live in Lamorna and embraced the spiritual nature of the landscape. We look at her various artistic techniques used to create her fascinatingly colourful creations and her connections with the spiritual world and the occult. This will be followed by a Guided tour of the exhibition at Tate St. Ives by Catherine.

To coincide with  the new display of some of its large art collection Catherine is running  a study morning at the Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery, River Street Truro which will include a lecture followed by a guided tour that will look at some of the major donors to the collection and some its prominent artists including John Opie, Henry Scott Tuke, John S. Sargent,  Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes,  Leghe Suthers, Robert Borlase Smart, W.H.Titcomb, Annie Walke, S.J.Lamorna Birch, Terence Tenison Cuneo, Bryan Pierce, W. Barns- Gram, Ben Nicholson, Terry Frost, Jack Pender, and Alexander McKenzie and many more.
