A wonderful portrait by the superbly talented portraitist Harold Knight RA (1874 – 1961) of his friend and fellow painter Robert Morson Hughes (1873 – 1953) – both lived and worked in the Lamorna valley near Newlyn Cornwall when this probably painted in the Lamorna Inn known as the Wink c. 1915 hence the reason why Hughes is holding a pint of beer.! Both were married to artists – Harold Knight to Laura Johnson DBE RA( 1877 – 1970) who was to become very famous and Robert Hughes to Eleanor Waymouth (1882 – 1959) who married after they met at the Forbes Shcool of painting and had come all the way from New Zealand to study art in Cornwall. This painting came up for auction recently in Cornwall and sold for £46,000.
